Sexually Transmitted Infections Unit

The creation of this unit allows Sanitas members access to fast, integral, efficient, confidential, and quality care in the field of sexually transmitted infections. It will consist of specialists in medical surgical dermatology and veneriology. These doctors will be responsible for diagnosing and treating the different STIs, as well as referring patients to other specialists (urologists, gynaecologists, internists, and so on) if necessary. The unit will be led by the dermatologist Dr Bruno Blaya Álvarez and will reserved for Sanitas members and private patients who may have developed genital sores or had unsafe sex (even if they have no symptoms).

Dermatology consultations in the Nicasio Gallego Milenium Medical Centre will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm and from 2.30 pm to 6 pm, as well as in the Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja on Fridays from 9.30 am to 1.30 pm for first appointments and urgent reviews of patients with suspected STIs. Patients referred by other specialists and by A&E doctors will be seen with priority in order to minimise the morbidity, contagiousness and anxiety associated with this type of pathology.
Certain pathologies are likely to be referred to the STI unit. These :

  • Thrush.
  • Soft Sore.
  • Genital warts (cases of female vaginal infection will be treated and monitored in collaboration with gynaecologists; cases of rectal infection will be treated in collaboration with gastroenterologists and/or general surgeons).
  • Genital herpes
  • Lymphogranuloma venereum
  • Molluscum contagiosum
  • Pubic lice
  • Scabies
  • Syphillis
  • Uncomplicated urethritis (cases of complicated urethritis or orchitis/prostatitis will be treated and monitored in collaboration with urologists).

Any genital lesion that cannot be readily diagnosed. STI screening will also be available on request for patients who have had unsafe sex.
